Football Worldcup
The FIFA World Cup, often simply
called the World Cup, is an international association football competition
contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of the Federation International
de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body.
The championship has been awarded
every four years since 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held
because of the Second World War. The current champion is France, which won its
second title at the 2018 tournament in Russia.
The 21 World Cup tournaments have been won by eight different national teams.
Brazil has won five times, and they are the only team to have played in every
tournament. The other winners are Italy, with four titles; Germany, with three
titles; Argentina and inaugural winners Uruguay, with two titles each; and
England, Spain, and France, with one title each.
The Football World Cup is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world,
with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the 2014 final between Germany
and Argentina on television worldwide.
Football Worldcup schedule
The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be the
20th FIFA World Cup, an international football tournament that is scheduled to
take place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014.
It will be the second time that
Brazil has hosted the competition, the first being in 1950.
Brazil was unanimously elected as the host nation by FIFA's Congress on 30 October
2007.
The national teams of 31 countries will advance from the group stage to the tournament's knockout stage. A total of 64 matches are to be played in 12
venues located in as many host cities across Brazil.
For the group stage, each group is to contain one team from each of FIFA's six
continental federations: Africa (CAF), Asia (AFC), Europe (UEFA), North and
Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF), Oceania (OFC) and South America
(CONMEBOL).
Each group will play a round-robin
tournament, with each team playing one match against each other team in its
group. This means that a total of 48 games will be played during the group
stage.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, where
they will compete in a single-elimination tournament.
The knockout stage will begin with a
round of 16, where each group winner will face off against a runner-up from
another group, and each team will play one match apiece. From there, the
winners of those matches will advance to either.
